Sociobiology has been an aggressive newcomer on the theoretical scene within the last decade. Ironically, it has attracted attention in sociology at the same time that its biological foundations have come under attack in its home discipline. Sociobiology is based on the theory of evolution, and this has been heavily criticized recently, and from two directions. On one side, there has been an onslaught by biblical fundamentalists who have attempted to displace the teaching of evolution or at least place it on a par with creation science in the schools. On the other side, there has been a challenge to evolution from within professional biology itself, led by Stephen Jay Gould, Elizabeth Vrba, Niles Eldredge, and others
