The present study investigates the relationship between identification with academic major, strength of self-concept, and the incidence of major-switching during the college career. Data are reported for males and feim.ales. The differential commitment of the sexes to family and occupation is also investigated. A significant relationship is found between the degree of identification with major and incidence of switching, and between identification and strength of self-concept. While females are not different fro'm males on an identification scale, they are less committed to future occupational roles
