This paper places the choice of major field by college students in the context of a market situation wherein students, as a resource, become allocated to various major departments; and it attempts to bring into focus the institutional arrangements which govern operation of this market. In the case studied, the requirement of pre-admission choice was found to make symbolic rather than rational elements pre-dominate in the initial selection of major departments; and it produced a narrowing down of initial choice to a small number of departments deemed right on a symbolic basis. Subsequent choices of major were governed by a process of contest mobility, wherein choices were evaluated in terms of the degree to which they represented winning or failing to win the student's initial major objective
