A model of teacher socialization is proposed in which pupils shape a teacher's behavior through an operant conditioning mechanism postulated to operate in the classroom. To test this model, certain linguistic effects are hypothesized to result from filling a teaching role. Specifically, it was hypothesized that primary teachers, and experienced elementary teachers, would evidence decreased speech complexity in their adult interactions. These hypotheses were supported in the case of teachers' use of complex modes of speech. Finally, speech forms are suggested as sociologically useful variables in studies of occupational socialization
