During the period in which student movements on campus were at their height, students participated in a study, presumably to ascertain attitudes towards campus life. The study attempted to make explicit the very processes of negotiating for reality. By using confederates, subjects were confronted with a choice between accepting the officially sponsored faculty version of their activity as work assignment or rejecting this as merely another experimental situation. A substantial tendency to accept the officially sponsored definition of the situation was found. In general, rhetoric which appealed to objective facets of the situation was more powerful in support of either official or deviant version of reality, but a rhetoric based upon student class interests, congruent with the deviant definition, was most effective in its support
