The IQ and achievement test scores of 1,102 Chicago area fifthand sixth-graders-black and white, middleand working-class-were aggregated into seven cohorts of approximately equal IQ scores. Within these cohorts differences in achievement emerge which cannot be attributed to raceor class-linked intellectual discrepancies. Among children with average IQ scores (95 to 104.9), whites score higher in achievement than blacks of the same sex and socioeconomic status, and middle-class children have a similar advantage over working-class children of the same race and sex. Consistently, overachievement and underachievement among children with similar IQ scores are related to race and class situations
