Surveys of undergraduate men at Dartmouth in 1952, 1968, and 1974 and at the University of Michigan in 1952, 1969, and 1974 used identical items. From 1952 to 1968-69 the changes were extensive-decline in traditional religion, increase in political commitments and social criticism, decline in other-direction, and a sharp drop in anxieties about deviant groups in society. From 1969 to 1974 many trends continued, but some reversals occurred toward more conservative values. Declines continued in church attendance, in fear of Communism, and in college extracurricular participation. Alienation from the military continued to rise. But the political commitments of the late 1960's weakened, some attitudes about economics and govemnment turned conservative, and commitment to higher education turned from a liberal to a vocational direction
