Les partisants des diplomes soutiennent que l'education confere davantage un statut que des competences. L'A. developpe cet argument par le biais d'un modele de « file d'atente » sur le marche du travail, puis utilise ce modele pour etudier l'effet de la taille du groupe des individus diplomes sur la rentabilite du diplome, notamment en terme de remuneration. Les effets sont reduits bien que presents. Alors que le modele economique traditionnel suggere que la taille du groupe peut constituer un handicap quand elle est importante, toutes choses egales par ailleurs, le modele de file d'attente montre que cela peut etre un atout
