Mothers and children made similar differentiations amongsymptoms. But whether individuals construed conditions as indicating illness depended both on who made the interpretation and who was being judged as healthy or sick. Mothers attributed illness more to children than to themselves; children, more to mothers than to themselves. Variationsfollowed a developmental pattern: mothers, more than children, and older children, more than younger, saw sickness in the other more readily than in the self This resulted from a shifting perspective on the self Socioeconomic status influenced symptom evaluation by mothers but had no similar effect on children's assessments. Illness attribution was a strong predictor of health-relevant action
