L'organisation sociale et politique de la societe ruandaise d'avant 1959 est ici etudiee en terme de pouvoir, pouvoir etant defini: 1'habilite d'un individu a infliger un dommage physique a un autre ou a le deposseder. Cette vie sociale et politique etait caracterisee par un monopole du pouvoir exerce par la minorite aristocratique des Tutsi, tandis que la caste des Hutu, formant quatre-vingts pour cent de la population, etait oppri mee et exploitee, demeurant quand meme soumise par neces site. Ce tableau de la societe ruandaise differe de celui trace par Maquet. II s'ecarte aussi des vues de Fortes, de Radcliffe Brown et d'Evans-Pritchard sur le type de systeme politique au Ruanda
