This article presents a detailed analysis of the Tiv economy in central Nigeria, focusing on its pre-colonial subsistence strategies and the impact of British colonial rule. The authors challenge the conventional view of the Tiv economy as primarily agricultural, highlighting the significant role of exchange and trade, particularly in the context of their multicentric political system. They argue that the introduction of a market economy by the British administration disrupted traditional Tiv economic practices and social structures, leading to significant social and political changes
