Pastoral nomads, from the reindeer herders of Arctic Eurasia to the camel pastoralists of the Middle Eastern deserts, must contend in some degree with common constraints and stimuli. Natural exigencies-drought, predators or epidemics-may result in the reduction of animal capital, while social crises, such as phases in the domestic developmental cycle or feuds, may further threaten the viability of the nomad's life by creating manpower shortages in herding groups or otherwise imbalancing ratios of humans to animals. The presence of a diffuse web of social ties-consanguineal, affinal or extra-kin -coupled with their physical mobility enables nomads to respond to such pressures by periodically utilising these ties for such purposes as replenishing depleted stock, gaining access to an ally's pasturage in times of local dearth, or realigning personnel for increased herding efficiency
