Resumo
Aidan Southall's article, "Nuer and Dinka Are People: Ecology, Ethnicity and Logical Possibility," challenges anthropological approaches that reduce ethnic identities to simplistic ecological determinism. Focusing on the Nuer and Dinka of southern Sudan, Southall argues against the prevailing view that their social structures and intergroup relations are solely shaped by environmental factors like cattle herding and access to resources. He emphasizes the importance of internal social dynamics, political processes, and historical contingencies in shaping ethnic identity and intergroup relations. Southall critiques the tendency to treat ethnic groups as static, bounded entities, highlighting the fluidity and situational nature of ethnic identification. He advocates for a more nuanced understanding of ethnicity that acknowledges the complex interplay of ecological, social, and political factors.
