Resumo
This review article by Lee Drummond and Sidney W. Mintz discusses Jack Goody's book "Production and Reproduction: A Comparative Study of the Domestic Domain." Drummond and Mintz commend Goody's ambitious cross-cultural comparison of kinship systems and their relationship to modes of production, particularly his focus on the contrast between Eurasian and African systems. They highlight Goody's arguments about the impact of plow agriculture and inheritance patterns on family structure and social organization. However, they also offer critical perspectives on some of Goody's theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches, suggesting areas where his analysis could be further developed and refined. Specifically, they question the rigidity of Goody's typologies and call for a more nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between kinship, economics, and culture.
