Resumo
This article examines the contrasting views of A.L. Kroeber and A.R. Radcliffe-Brown on kinship behavior, using Fanti matrilineal social organization as a test case. Kronenfeld argues that Kroeber's statistical approach, focusing on behavioral patterns and probabilities, offers a more accurate and nuanced understanding of kinship dynamics than Radcliffe-Brown's structural-functionalist perspective, which emphasizes ideal norms and social structure. By analyzing Fanti kinship terminology and observed behavior, the author demonstrates that actual practices often deviate from prescribed rules, highlighting the importance of empirical data in kinship studies. The article concludes that Kroeber's emphasis on statistical regularities in behavior provides a more robust framework for understanding the complexities of kinship systems.
