Resumo
This article explores the commodification of the past, arguing that it is becoming a scarce resource subject to increasing appropriation and control. Appadurai examines how different groups and nations utilize the past to construct their identities and legitimize their claims in the present. He introduces the concept of "past-as-property" and analyzes the various ways in which the past is used as a symbolic and material resource, including the preservation of monuments, the creation of historical narratives, and the repatriation of cultural artifacts. The article highlights the conflicts and tensions that arise from competing claims to the past and the implications for social, political, and economic power dynamics.
