Resumo
This article critiques Clifford Geertz's influential definition of religion, arguing that it reflects a specifically Protestant bias. Asad challenges Geertz's emphasis on systems of symbols and the individual's inner experience, proposing instead to focus on the historical and material conditions that shape religious practices and discourses. He examines how power relations, disciplinary techniques, and ritual actions contribute to the construction of religious authority and meaning. Asad suggests that anthropology should move beyond a focus on belief and meaning to analyze the complex interplay of power, practice, and discourse in the formation of religious traditions.
