Resumo
This article examines the constitutive relationships among place, talk, and the transformation of experience in a Fijian village. The analysis focuses on the intersection of two complementary modes of expression: *talanoa*, an intimate, informal mode of “everyday” talk, and *vakamacala*, a formal, public mode of “ceremonial” presentation. Through an examination of the distinctive ways in which these modes of discourse organize social experience, the article explores the complex dynamics of place-making in Fijian social life. It argues that place is not simply a static backdrop for human action but rather a dynamic process of social construction, constituted through the interplay of talk, ritual, and the ongoing negotiation of social identities.
