Resumo

This article examines the concept of exemplars and their role in anthropological analysis. Pocock and Needham argue against the prevailing use of exemplars as isolated instances of a general rule or type. They contend that exemplars are not simply illustrations but rather constitutive elements of the categories they represent. Focusing on the work of Durkheim and Evans-Pritchard, they demonstrate how the selection and interpretation of exemplars shape the understanding of social phenomena. The authors advocate for a more nuanced approach to exemplars, recognizing their inherent ambiguity and the potential for multiple interpretations. They suggest that focusing on the interplay between exemplars and the categories they exemplify can lead to a richer and more dynamic understanding of cultural systems.
