An evolutionary change in the objectives of the southern civil rights movement has produced a consequent change in the leadership structure of its component movement organizations. Forces encouraging this change operate both within and outside these organizations. The net effect has been to reduce the importance of the general charismatic leader in favor of a cadre of specialized leaders. The transformation of movement organizations has transformed the charismatic leader into a specialized leader in organizations which, upon accomplishing short-range goals, have changed to meet the challenge of new and long-range objectives
