Cet article specule sur la place de la contradiction dans la construction symbolique du monde. En contraste avec un travail extensif en anthropologie sur l'ubiquite de la classification symbolique dans les societes et les cultures humaines, une attention insuffisante a ete portee sur la contradiction comme atout cognitif: sur le fait que les acteurs jouent sur les classifications symboliques, et les rejettent en meme temps qu'ils les assument. Par la juxtaposition de sources litteraires, theoriques et empiriques, l'article trace les contours d'une these sur l'importance, la prevalence et le but du recours a la contradiction comme un trait conscient de l'usage du langage. Postuler l'existence de 'mots', de 'communautes' et d''individus' peut etre interprete en termes d' efforts visant symboliquement a definir, singulariser, limiter et rendre congru ce qui est simultanement reconnu comme multiple, illimite et incoherent. Un compte-rendu de l'immigration americaine contemporaine dans l'Etat d'Israel donne un fondement empirique a la these exposee dans cet article
