L'A. retrace l'histoire de la notion d'«intouchabilite». Il montre que celle-ci se refere a la situation sociale d'une large partie du peuple indien qui souffre de nombreuses humiliations sociales. Il affirme que le terme intouchable a ete utilise au 20 e siecle par les elites indiennes de culture britannique qui etaient preoccupees du sort des populations concernees par ce type de situation sociale. Il met en relief les limites de ce concept et pose le probleme de la survie du systeme des castes dans le cadre de la societe indienne contemporaine
