In this study we propose that leave-taking, as distinct from and as a constraint upon leaving, presupposes and reifies social structure in much the sense that, for example, Durkheim argues that the totemic system of religious practices the structure of the societies in which they were found. In examining the conditions under which leave-taking appears as the required way of departing, we find: 1) that it terminates the sense of occasioned presence and together (it does not just or necessarily terminate focused interaction); and 2) presupposes a relationship between departing members to the occasion. These two social facts are dialectically related to each other via leavetaking: we ritually observe the personal relationships' transoccasional continuity precisely at the time of terminating that sense of being occasionally bound together. Hence, it is argued, leave-taking is not just a perfunctory action but one which presupposes a certain structure to social life and which reproduces it in its course
