The writer instructed two Yale students to copy from the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) and from the Cross GCultural Survey Files (CCSF) all slips pertaining to so-called spontaneous parapsychological occurrences, including those which occur in a ritual context, but in an informal manner, such as the practical joking with pieces of scalding hot meat after such meat is handled ritually, as happens in some Plains tribes. One of these students was a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology who is especially interested in the supernaturalistic aspects of primitive religion. The other was an extremely sophisticated undergraduate with a special interest in parapsychology. The relevant data covered approximately 1,000 pages, or, roughly speaking, several thousands of individual items
