Notions of what demography is or ought to be vary considerably, depending essentially upon the predilections of the individual. Many who are concerned with research in human population do not regard themselves as demographers. Investigation has revealed that such people have been trained in a variety of disciplines but with a preponderance in sociology; ca., threefifths of the members of the Population Association of America were trained in sociology, ca., one-half of the members of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (Hauser and Duncan 1960:21, 107). Few anthropologists belong to either grouping. Hauser and Duncan (1960:61) once suggested the following as a working definition: Demography is the study of the size, territorial distribution, and composition of population, changes therein, and the components of such changes, which may be identified as natality, mortality, territorial movement (migration), and social mobility (change of status). The critical element in this and most other working definitions is the population concept; not simply the scope of the population in question but also the relation of other variable systems to the population concerned
