Theoretically there are as valid reasons for assuming urban life personally superior to and richer than rural life as the reverse. An examination of social networks at three levels of urbanization in Tirol, Austria, indicates that urbanites are more active socially and more often have friends (in the intimate sense of the word). Kinship does not suffer at the hand of friendship, nor does it compensate for the absence of friendship. Recent American studies indicate that cities in the United States also foster greater contact with friends than rural or small town areas
