The disintegration of state socialism in Eastern Europe has freed local academics from the rigid Party discipline which demanded that scholarship serve ideology. For Czech ethnographers the new freedom has meant a re-orientation towards western-style ethnology/social anthropology and a rejection of the politicized scholarship of the socialist era as an alien element forcibly imposed from the outside. This article reviews the history of Czech ethnography and demonstrates that the politicization of scholarship attributed to state socialism extends to the very roots of the discipline in nineteenth-century bourgeois nationalism. The preoccupation with native studies is identified as the main source of political bias and one which facilitated the acceptance of state-controlled scholarship during the socialist era.
