Romanian collective-farm delegate assemblies are analyzed as secular rituals. Unlike ritual in general, assemblies are seen to promote social change and contradiction. This results from the themes, format, and symbolic content of assemblies being differentially interpreted by farm leaders and citizen delegates. These differential interpretations clarify the changes on-going in Romanian society for meeting participants, cause leaders and citizens to caricature each other, and widen a gulf growing between them. Unlike rituals of rebellion, catharsis is not attained in assemblies. Instead, they augment emotion and call the nature of prevailing sociopolitical relations into question
