This article is based on data collected during fieldwork in western Croatia from 1977 to 1980 and concerns the relationship of Mardi Gras to social stability and order as well as to instability and change. Though I restrict my examination of Mardi Gras to this one aspect, it also has a variety of other associated features and functions: a ritual which shifts from the manipulation of nature to the manipulation of people and an innovative expression of village life
