Spaniards say that their fiestas reflect their various cultural identities and « personalities » and that fiesta cycles in towns and cities define a « community ». Cycles at the regional level supposedly define a « people » or « nationality ». A similar cycle of fiestas occurs at the level of the nation-state, but this « community » is ignored, or denied, by many for political and historical reasons. « Spanish » nationality is still a dilemna in Spain. However, the national fiesta cycle offers a model for a non-hierarchical, plural Spain
