This article addresses the question, are sick people treated as they are? and proposes an answer in terms of the Lisu theory of misfortune. The author discusses the availability of different types of therapies and presents statistical data on the use of therapies and how they relate to the economic situations of households. He then asks why the theory of misfortune, in particular the notions of disease, diagnosis, and therapy, should take the form it does and develops an analysis in terms of Kuhn 's idea of paradigms
