This paper examines the post-Franco political transition in Spain after nearly 40 years of dictatorial rule. The 1977parliamentary election-is analysed as a series of fine gradations in political action and behavior exemplified by the use (or non-use) of certain primordial themes and symbols. A case study of Catalonia the only region where a combination of ethnic nationalism and left-of-center ideologies proved unbeatable) shows the problems inherent in political mobilization and the need for a new political socialization. One avenue for meeting these problems was based on the measured use of emotionally powerful symbols which have a reality outside theformalpolitical structure and institutions, and can be a potent force in inducing change
