Guy Michelat : The Catholic identity of French people.I. Dimensions of religiosity. In 1986, 81 % of French people declared themselves Catholics. What does such a statement mean ?Are they all Catholics to the same degree, in other words, do they all adhere to the organized system of Catholic representation, attitude, belief and practice in the same manner ?Are there not several ways of being a Catholic, or in other terms, are there not numerous dimensions to religiosity, all independent of each other ?To reply to these questions, five scales (practice, belief, attitude towards the religious institution, religious activities and the acceptance of heterodoxy), based on the technique of hierarchical analysis, have been devised. The scales serve to isolate and measure each dimension, each one being strongly related to the others, so that a given position on one scale allows, with a relatively high probability, the positions on the other scales to be determined.Looking beyond the specific nature of each of these scales, it is also possible to measure the level of integration in Catholicism
