L’Allemagne au-dessus de tout représente un ouvrage de circonstances lié à la Première Guerre mondiale. Toutefois, la facture et la méthode adoptées révèlent un raisonnement éminemment sociologique puisque Durkheim utilise des notions-clefs de sa sociologie comme le « normal » et le « pathologique » ou encore le « milieu ». Ce livre permet également au sociologue de prendre position par rapport au darwinisme social (approche très répandue dans les études militaires avant 1914) tout en se positionnant à l’égard de la pensée allemande. Alors qu’il reflète un intérêt pour les questions de la guerre, cet écrit reste marginal dans les études consacrées à l’un des pères de la sociologie, notamment sous la plume de sociologues qui souhaitent intégrer Durkheim dans le champ des relations internationales
