Questionnaire items measuring four attitudes which motivate having children were completed by a sample of women 18 years of age and over. Multivariate analysis was used to ascertain the existence of a causal influence of educational level and religion on attitudes. Religion appeared to have a direct causal relationship with two of the attitudes among women having up to 12 years of schooling and under $4,000 income who attended church every'week, with Protestants accepting these attitudes less than Catholics. It was also found that, of the fo-ur attitudes measured, the one most strongly accepted was that it is a woman's main responsibility in life and her social duty to bear children
