In a sample of young, white, recently married couples the greatest value consensus was found among those in the high (professional) SES group. However, level of value consensus was found to reflect both the amount of general accord between husband and wife and the degree to which specific value areas are emphasized by particular sex-status groups. Working class couples exhibit relatively low consensus because of the poor pairing of spouses within the status group, while middle class couples exhibit approximately the same level of consensus because of the tendency for the husbands and wives to emphasize somewhat different values
