The presenting problems of 641 marriages coming to marital counseling were factor-analyzed to produce six factors corroborated by a modified linkage analysis. The factors were interpreted as pairs, referring either to the husband or to the wife, and were used as a basis for distinction of three main dimensions of marital maladjustments: (1) dominance-submission power struggle; (2) the alienation pole of an affection-alienation dimension; and (3) the avoidance pole of an intimacy-avoidance dimension. Within each area, practical difficulties, interpersonal conflict and personal defects or maladjustment interacted to an extent indicating that marriage counselors could not afford to concentrate on a particular aspect of a client's problem without some knowledge of his current context. Applications of the findings for counseling and training of counselors are indicated
