THE ASSOCIATION between educational retardation and parental attitudes and practices is a complex one. Among the attitudes that mothers of educationally retarded children report are feelings that motherhood deprives women of their youth and freedom and that children are exhausting, demanding, and burdensome. A very sophisticated analysis of maternal attitudes and intellectual development which places these feelings in context has recently become available.'
