Twenty-nine years ago I began my career as a family life educator with my first courses on Preparation for Marriage and on The Family at tiny William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Twenty-three years ago I completed my marriage counseling training at the MerrillPalmer Institute in Detroit and began my part-time private practice. At the same time I joined the faculty of the University of Michigan and became a family researcher, subject to the publish-or-perish norms of a high-pressure, graduate-student oriented De: partment of Sociology. For the next fifteen years, I combined the roles of researcher, teacher, and counselor which Reuben Hill had inculcated in me during my doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina. In 1967 I went to Japan on my second sabbatical leave from the University of Michigan, never intending to return there, and knowing that this meant the end of my research career.
