This study identifies the main work sequences qf women during the first three stages qf marriage-before having children, when the children are preschool age, and when the children have begun school. Also considered is the influence of level of education, birthplace and year of marriage on work sequence, and an A.LD. analysis illustrates the characteristics of women most likely to adopt a given pattern of work. The discussion also relates to the continuity of workforce participation during marriage, patterns of part-time work, and the effect of the timing of births on the choice of work sequence
