This study examines the relationship between industrialization and the family structure in Hong Kong. Data are collected from several related studies as well as a representative sample study of2,270 families, and analyzed and interpreted from a historical-functional perspective. The findings show that, as the development of industrialization moves along a pre-early-advanced continuum, there have been corresponding changes in the structure of the family which evolves from a temporary, broken extended form, to a settled stem one, and currently toward a small nuclear one. Correlational analyses have also confirmed the associations of such industrialization correlates as native township, education, occupation and religion, with the family
