Resumo

This article examines the events surrounding Padre Cícero Romão Batista's excommunication from the Catholic Church following the alleged miracle of the transformation of beata Maria Madalena de Araújo's communion wafer into blood in 1889 in Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil. The authors analyze the social and political context of the event, arguing that the miracle and subsequent events served as a catalyst for the development of a popular religious movement independent of the official Church. They explore the role of Padre Cícero as a charismatic leader who effectively mobilized the local population and challenged the authority of the Church hierarchy. The article also discusses the complex interplay between religious beliefs, social dynamics, and political power in the context of late 19th-century Brazil, highlighting the significance of the Juazeiro miracle as a formative moment in the history of Brazilian popular Catholicism.
