Using data from five national surveys, this study examines trends in attitudes toward premarital sexual relations. The results indicate that the approval of premarital sexual relations has increased in the 1970s and the differences between various groups in their approval of premarital sexual permissiveness have narrowed. It is also indicated that there is a need to reformulate the theoretical framework of premarital sexual permissiveness in view of the declining influence of some factors such as social class, sex, and race. Significant implications in terms of premarital pregnancy and abortion are foreseen because of increasing premarital sexual permissive
