This study examines the major causes for the extraordinary increase in the Soviet divorce rate which has become the second highest in the world. In addition it examines the impact of Soviet law on the level of divorce and looks at some underlying reasons for recent trends. While alcoholism adultery and incompatibility are the ostensible major causes of divorce Soviet housing problems and the changed role of women also have contributed to the rising divorce rates. Finally the study suggests some of the psychological and socioeconomic consequences of divorce in the Soviet Union: the impact on children the financial status of women the remarriage rate and the impact on the labor force.
