The object of this paper is to re-examine Parsonian orthodoxy on the narrowing and weakening of kin definitions, investigating in particular the working-class ,family in its employment context. It is argued that the family can, and does, maintain itself within the general context of industrial society and in particular within the employment context. Indeed, the author argues that it is precisely the employment context and the information and migration mechanisms related to it which may operate so as to intensify and widen kin connections, in direct contrast to the Parsonian vision
