Adoption of children other than stepchildren is rare among all married couples in the United States but in some subgroups of the population it is an important means of acquiring children. Data from a national sample of women interviewed in 1976 are analyzed to show that having adopted a child was most common among women who had never borne a child those who were sterile for noncontraceptive reasons the currently married and those age 30 or older at the time of interview. Nearly half of the women who possessed all of these characteristics had adopted a child. Implications of these findings for trends in the demand for adoption are considered. (EXCERPT)
