Resumo

This article examines the encounter between Yup'ik Eskimos and Moravian missionaries John and Edith Kilbuck in southwestern Alaska at the turn of the twentieth century. It focuses on the Kilbucks' efforts to translate biblical texts and hymns into Yup'ik, and the complex cultural negotiations that ensued. The article analyzes how Yup'ik oral traditions and spiritual beliefs shaped their understanding and adaptation of Christian concepts. It also explores the Kilbucks' evolving views on Yup'ik culture and their role in mediating between the Yup'ik community and the wider world. The study draws on archival materials, including the Kilbucks' personal papers and Moravian mission records, as well as Yup'ik oral histories and ethnographic accounts.
