The intention is to focus attention on the economic and political development of the Sudan to describe the progress and problems encountered in this development process and to provide a comprehensive consideration of the situation. Much of the effort has been devoted to piecing together semi-isolated fragments of data analyzing the why and how of statistical irreconcilables and ferreting out unpublished semi-official information. The 8 chapters following the introductory statements focus on population and manpower; an economic overview; agriculture and forestry; transport power and industry; the financial system; external economic relations; the problems and prospects of development planning; and balanced regional progress in the future. In the Sudan both geogrpahy and history have been a problem. Mostly an arid region that has been conquered by many the Sudan has only recently begun to offer its people a better way of life. Over the past 5000 years the moist climate and fertile soils have changed and the people have had to adjust to desert conditions. Water continues to be the key to agricultural development and most of the people depend upon it for their livelihood. At this time most of the Sudanese have low incomes and standards of living; their country is among the poorest in the world. With proper management the Sudanese should be able to use their potential as a food and fibre supplier to the rest of the world
