L'opera de Pekin a Taiwan a une position privilegiee et prestigieuse grâce a la politique culturelle du gouvernement chinois au detriment d'autres expressions artistiques traditionnelles. A travers une analyse de la politique culturelle, l'A. montre comment un regime construit sa propre image au niveau national puis international, et comment le controle etatique des institutions symboliques peut refleter une ideologie et des strategies de gouvernement. Les spectacles sont appropries comme des symboles politiques, notamment pour le Parti Nationaliste ; ils sont definis en fonction du calendrier des elections et des programmes politiques. Le contexte recent de democratisation a Taiwan offre l'opportunite d'etudier les formes d'un art politise en train de se modifier
