S'appuyant sur des reflexions recentes qui proposent d'etendre la definition conventionnelle de l'archive, de l'archiviste, et du processus d'archivage, l'A. suggere que certains types de composition musicale peuvent etre consideres comme une pratique d'archivage, qui permet la conservation et la recuperation ou le sauvetage de styles et pratiques historiques dans des situations de perte, tant dans des contextes de cultures de l'ecriture ou de l'oralite. S'inspirant notamment des approches de J. Derrida (la fievre de l'archive) et de S. Stewart (narration, souvenir et collection), l'A. illustre son propos a travers trois moments et personnages historiques, deux d'Afrique du Sud, Isaiah Shembe et Nathoya Mbatha, le troisieme, David Fanshawe, un explorateur-voyageur musical britannique dans l'Afrique du Nord et de l'Est des annees 1960-1970. L'A. soutient que les trois ont utilise la composition musicale et l'arrangement comme archive, comme espace de conservation, dans lequel ils ont insere l'Africanite en tant que style et/ou en tant que son
